Mr. Swapan Mallik, a veteran BNP activist and leader and the nephew of ex-parliamentarian Laxmi Kanta Baul (deceased), passed away today from heart disease which brought an end to the often controversial political travails of Swapan Mallik. Swapan Mallik till the end of his life was the General Secretary of BNP Committee of Nabagram. In an area where the Hindu minority are actually the majority and generally support the ruling government party, Swapan Mallik was an exception in that despite being from the minority, he held nationalist political fervour and was an ardent advocate of the nationalism espoused by the founder of BNP, Zia Ur Rahman.
Because of the alleged persecution of BNP as a party, Swapan Mallik raised complaints on many occasions against the ruling party and the law enforcement agencies all of which were branded as corrupt and partisan. Swapan Mallik’s cousin Sukanta Mallik, presently in the UK, and his family are alleged to have suffered brutally at the hands of the creditors mainly because of their association with Swapan Mallik. Swapan Mallik’s protestations were futile given the diminished strength of the party. Swapan Mallik was imprisoned numerous times and was on bail when he passed away.
Nabagram BNP committee expressed its grief and commiserations at the demise of their leader and has convened a ceremonial commemoration meeting on 23 August 2019.
